A life threatening pregnancy complication usually considered to be a variant of preeclampsia. HELLP stands for Hemolysis (which is the breaking down of red blood cells), Elevated liver enzymes and a low platelet count. It can lead to serious blood and liver problems. Impaired mitochondrial function may contribute to this condition.
