Investigational drug for treatment of mitochondrial disease. A small inorganic molecule that increases the rate of oxidative phosphorylation, the main pathway by which the energy in food is converted to the form used by the body (ATP). It does this by inhibiting the enzyme that diverts food energy to an alternative pathway that leads instead to the build-up of lactic acid.
