A relatively small organic (i.e., carbon-containing) molecule whose presence is required in order for the biological activity of an enzyme to occur. Thus, coenzymes are a particular kind of cofactor. Many coenzymes are vitamins or derivatives thereof, and vice versa. Coenzymes are involved in a huge number of reactions catalyzed by enzymes.
