Autoimmune disorder affecting mainly the back. Belong to the group called rheumatic diseases, i.e., those affecting joints, tendons, ligaments, bones and muscles. Can result in eventual disabling fusion of some bones in the spine (vertebrae). Mitochondrial dysfunction probably contributes to the disease process. The HLA-B27 antigen is a strong risk factor, but the causes of AS are not well understood
