A progressive nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing nerve degeneration, muscle atrophy and loss of voluntary muscle control. Invariably fatal. Inherited in 5-10% of cases, otherwise cause unknown. Mitochondrial dysfunction seems to be a key part of the disease process.
