A difficult- to- define/diagnose disorder characterized by abdominal pain and altered bowel habit (diarrhea, constipation, or both, either mixed or in alternation). Relatively common – perhaps 5-10% of the population, but with causes little understood – no clear biomarkers. Mitochondrial dysfunction may be a contribution factor.
