A serious complication of cirrhosis of the liver. Marked by degeneration of cells, inflammation, and fibrous thickening of the liver tissue, with a critically poor diagnosis. The medical hallmark is severe renal constriction of blood vessels. This results in a complex change of the blood supply of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, splen, and pancreas. Mitochondrial dysfunction appears to be part of the disease process.
