Recycling for Special Families
Gently Used Equipment Exchange for Mito Patients
Many families struggle with high deductibles or insurance requirements that prevent their children or family members from getting adaptive or therapeutic equipment as needed. Because mitochondrial disease can affect a person’s muscle tone, energy levels, and ability to eat or speak, many families find assistive equipment necessary.
Our goal at MitoAction is to improve the everyday quality of life for people affected by mitochondrial disease. We would like to support families who need equipment by connecting them with other patients or families who have gently used items to donate. As a service to our patients and families, MitoAction will pay for the shipping costs for any item up to 150 pounds within the US & Canada*
*Items must be able to be boxed and have a total size of less than 165 inches TOTAL (the formula is length + 2x width + 2x height). If an item is too large for one box, it is a great option to break up the item into a few smaller boxes if possible (wheels in one box, seat in another). Items can be picked up at the donor’s residence, but must be packaged by the donor. Email us equipment@mitoaction.org for pickup and account information.
Items that are commonly requested or donated include:
- Tumbleform seats
- Pediatric wheelchairs (generic sizes)
- Walkers
- Formula for enteral nutrition (within expiration date)
- Infusion pumps for IV, g-tube, or TPN support
- "BackJacks" or other sitting devices for preschool circle time
- Adaptive chairs, such as Rifton chairs, Tripp-trapp chairs
- Jog strollers, freedom strollers
- Modified tricycles, bicycles, or play equipment
- Augmentive speech/communication devices or software
For more information about donating or receiving equipment, email our project coordinator Millie at equipment@mitoaction.org
MitoAction is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization. All donated items are federally tax deductible and will be acknowledged by a receipt from MitoAction.
